Therapeutic Horticulture Program

Wilmot Greenhouse UF

In Fall 2019, I started volunteering with the Therapeutic Horticulture Program at Wilmot Botanical Gardens in the University of Florida. Within a greenhouse and garden environment the program seeks to decrease stress and mental fatigue, boost self-esteem and self-efficacy, and provide community, creativity, and optimism. Every week, I had the ability to work with a Veterans group with special needs. I accompanied them as they actively connected with plants and nature for a restorative experience. Some of the things I do are plant seedlings, mix soil, weed the garden beds, or water the various plants in the greenhouse and garden. These natural experiences have a beneficial effect on quality of life.
